NFL announces 5 teams that will play in Europe next season

Must read

The NFL will return to the United Kingdom and Germany next season, as the league announced Thursday the five teams that are designated to play internationally. Opponents facing each team in the European games will be announced when the full NFL schedule is released later this year. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The Bills and Titans will both play at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
  • The Jaguars will return to Wembley Stadium to play in London for the 10th time in franchise history.
  • The Chiefs and Patriots will both play games in Germany. The cities hosting will be announced later this year.
  • There are no games scheduled in Mexico for the 2023 regular season due to stadium renovations.

The Bills last played in London in 2015, while the Titans crossed the pond to play at Wembley in 2018.

NFL teams played their first-ever regular-season game in Munich at Allianz Arena, home of FC Bayern, on Nov. 13, 2022. The Buccaneers beat the Seahawks 21-16 in that game with quarterback Tom Brady calling it “one of the great football experiences” of his career.

Though the locations of the Chiefs and Patriots games haven’t yet been set, the league previously confirmed that Munich and Frankfurt will host games over the next four years.

How will the NFL stage games in Germany in 2023?

The NFL had so much demand for its first regular season game in Germany last year, it likely could have sold close to three million tickets (the stadium seated over 70,000). While the NFL has been playing real games in London since 2007, Germany has more avid fans of the league than the UK, according to internal NFL research. Whether it’s because of the U.S. military bases in Germany or something else, the country has a strong passion for American football. So it’s no surprise the NFL is doubling the number of games there in 2023. It still will have to work out where.

Last year’s Bucs-Seahawks game played in Munich’s Allianz Arena was the first non-soccer event there since the venue opened in 2005. And word is the Bundesliga is not eager to see non-soccer entertainment become a regular occasion there or elsewhere. German soccer stadiums are treated as hallowed cathedrals, with the multi-use purposes common in America venues not done in Germany.

The NFL is committed to playing games in both Munich and Frankfurt, though the league has not yet identified where the 2023 games will be staged. The two home teams for the 2023 games, the Chiefs and Patriots, each claim Germany as an International Home Marketing Area, the program that allows teams to market in foreign countries. The Bucs also have Germany as an IHMA, as do the Panthers. Because the teams that host games overseas must have nine home games that year as part of the unbalanced 17-game schedule, in 2023 only AFC teams can host international contests. — Kaplan
