Is Chris Gayle playing IPL 2023? T20 cricket great’s situation in Indian Premier League explained

T20 legend Chris Gayle is one of the most high-profile names to have featured in the Indian Premier League since it began in 2008.

After a debut season in the competition with the Kolkata Knight Riders, Gayle went on to break the record for the fastest ever T20 century — for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013 — and star for the Punjab Kings from 2018.

The West Indies great has scored almost 5,000 runs in the competition ahead of the start of the 2023 IPL.

Is Chris Gayle playing IPL 2023?

Gayle is not playing in the 2023 IPL, although he sounded like he is keen to feature in the competition again.

“I don’t know why they are calling those names,” he bluntly told PTI, via Outlook India. “Just give me the money, man.”

After attending an event where he and AB de Villiers were inducted into the RCB Hall of Fame, Gayle was asked about a possible IPL return and replied: “Absolutely, I would love that. I am ready.”

De Villiers was more circumspect, however. “I think the team is too good at the moment. We won’t get a chance in the starting XI. We would rather be fans and support the boys to bring the trophy back home,” he said.

Was Chris Gayle in the IPL auction?

Now 43, Kingston-born Gayle featured in the latest auction, but only by regaling fans with his thoughts on the deals being done.

Ever the entertainer, he quipped that the most expensive signings — Sam Curran, Cameron Green and Ben Stokes — are the “prive jet category” players.

Curran joined Punjab Kings, while Green will turn out for the Mumbai Indians and Stokes signed for Chennai Super Kings.

Chris Gayle IPL 2022: Did he play?

Gayle joined Punjab Kings in 2018 and impressed for his new team, notably scoring 104 off 63 balls in a match that April against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

He averaged a strike rate of 143.21 by the time he left the team in 2021, saying he wanted to “mentally recharge and refresh” following time in a succession of team ‘bubbles’ during the pandemic.

Gayle also said he wanted to spend time in Dubai and help the West Indies try to win the T20 World Cup. He did not feature in the IPL 2022.

Chris Gayle team: Who does he play for?

Gayle’s most recent matches have come in Legends League Cricket for the World Giants, including a knock of 57 against the India Maharajas in Doha on March 15.

Before that, his most recent game had been for the Giants in Jodhpur in October 2022.

Chris Gayle cricket future: What’s he said?

Speaking to PTI in December, Gayle said he was “on a break” from cricket but was targeting “a few tournaments” in 2023.

“I am still active, fresh, good looking,” he said. “I have the best body in the world. My playing future will always look bright until I am 50.”
