Aai: AAI hires new firm to set up shops at international, domestic terminals in Chennai airport | Chennai News – Times of India

CHENNAI: In three to four months, passengers may be able to have better shopping experience before they board their flights at the city airport as Airports Authority of India (AAI) has hired a new company to set up shops at the domestic and international terminals including the new terminal scheduled to open next month.
A master concessionaire has been selected to identify and rope in the best of brands in retail, apparel, essentials, toys and others to open shops in the terminal.
The existing shops were running on extension and were not investing on quality.
The contract has been awarded as the number of passengers have increased and business is back at the terminals. A new integrated terminal is also ready for commissioning and will require better designed shops. “We will need a new agency to ensure that the brands will invest in better quality design and shops in the new terminal,” said an official.
However, passengers may have to spend more as AAI will be charging a licence fee of 6crore per month which is an increase from the existing rates. Sources said that the firms who will come forward to set up the shops may have to pass on the cost to the customers. AAI had initially decided to set up shops for apparel, toys, stationary, footwear, mobile accessories and other shops on its own.
The number of passengers has increased to 55,000 per day and is set to increase in the summer months.
